Build a Library

Slices of days 300 through 306. Full images are shared at the bottom of the post.

When I first started posting my focus was on designing an entire alphabet. Each new letterform or punctuation brought with it a bit of excitement and sometimes a little trepidation. (You don’t realize how truly odd ampersands are until you are staring at one trying to recreate it.)

However, as time went on I started to see how I am also creating a library of visuals to pull from. While the letterforms are important, I kept seeing how the other elements really communicate the concept.

The more elements I create the more options of visuals for future artwork.

For example this week I used what was initially the dot from a lowercase “i” (essentially a squashed square) and used as sprinkled dust in “Let the Dust Settle” and both confetti and chocolate chips in “Cookie Time”.

The shapes are all of same, but changing the color and how it is used in the layout changes what it becomes.

As you create your artwork be aware what is in your “library of visuals”. Is something a one-off or can it be repurposed in future pieces?
