Punch It and Other Deep Thoughts

A big thank you to everyone who participated in last week’s survey. It was sooo helpful. I have repeatedly read through all of the responses as I’m deciding next steps for this blog as well as some overall goals.

Of course, if you didn’t get a chance to reply and would still like to weigh-in, I gotcha boo. Here’s that link. It only takes a quick minute or two and I would love to hear from you. Except, any comment about how I should make my husband more pies will be ignored. #nicetryDean

There are a couple of things I want to share this week. First, I have completed a new piece of artwork using Hole-Punch Pointillism. I’ve been playing with it for the past year and I am loving it for a few reasons.

For those who may not be familiar, the gist of Hole-Punch Pointillism is to hole-punch paint swatches creating dots of color that are then glued to paper in order to create a new image.

And no, I am not insane. Nor am I punishing myself for past transgressions involving unwanted birthday confetti being thrown at friends and family. #festiveforever

This new venture came about when I was talking with a friend on how to use paint swatches to create art. There are lots of cool things being done out there. A quick search on Pinterest will back me up on that one.

However, I thought about pointillism and how using paint swatches could be an interesting take on the idea. I was curious if there was uniformity to the size and color of the dots would it still work? #hmmm

I took a page in my sketchbook and did a small image of an eye using only gray paint swatches. When I finished, I created a quick video where I zoomed out from the page and the more I looked at it I was struck by how well it worked.

One of my takeaways from this process has been the importance of play. If you have a wondering about something, whether it’s something you want to create, an idea you want to share or a concept you want to learn more about, give yourself the gift of unhindered time to play and experiment.

Another reason I am enjoying this style is how it’s reminding me about lessons I learned in school about color, but it sort of feels like there are deeper concepts in the mix.

For example, a color can seem to change depending upon it’s proximity to other colors. Like I am SURE that a swatch is gray but then I hold it up to another swatch it suddenly looks more blue instead. #whoa

As I was getting close to completing the giraffe, I was trying to decide how I wanted to finish the overall piece. And this is where it starts to get interesting.

I didn’t want to cover the whole page with dots, not just because YIKES, that’s A LOT of dots, but more because there needs to be some place for your eye to rest. So I decided to use the negative space to show the dots coming together.

The more I looked at the page, and saw the dots coming together to make something new, the more I saw a parallel to people.

SIDENOTE: Considering some of the view of humanity lately, I’m all for a reminder of the lovely potential baked inside all of us.

Looking at the transition of individual dots, into small groups, then larger clusters and finally coming together to make a beautiful new image it reminded me that there are things in this world that are made better when we all show up and use our gifts.

OK, I could clearly go on and on about this (#verbalprocessor) but I will refrain from going too hippy-dippy and hope this gives you a new thought about how you show up in the world and the value of your unique voice and talents.

Lastly, I got an update that the Typism books are being printed and will ship soon, coming all the way from Australia. #g’daymate

This is the first time my artwork is being published and I’m so stoked. For those who were curious if they could get a copy of the book, here is a link to order one.

Although, lest I sound too confident, I did have a dream where my email reply to Typism accepting my artwork got lost in cyberspace and so they cut me out of the book. #noooo

Here’s that link for the survey again. While I do think I’m going to do surveys on the regularly cuz you people really showed up for this, this particular one will close after this week.

Thanks again for the privilege of dropping into your inbox. If you know of anyone who would enjoy this kind of nonsense, please share it.
