Marking Milestones

Slices of days 547 through 553. Full images are shared at the bottom of the post.

Each week I try to share relevant topics that, hopefully, bring value to your inbox. Along the way, I document things that are happening during this little artistic journey of mine. Today, I am going to share about a milestone I recently reached.

Five months ago I wrote a post using this same title (you can read it here). I’ve decided that I will repeat this title every time I’m sharing about something exciting that is happening with my work.

The milestone that I am marking this week is that I have multiple jobs going on in my design business utilizing my illustration work.

You see, my full-time gig is doing graphic design. I’ve got my own business that I run with my husband. If you are interested in hearing more about what we do, you can check out our design blog here.

I really do enjoy design work, but illustration and hand-lettering scratch a completely different artistic itch of mine.

Obviously, there is potential for overlap between the work of graphic design and illustration, but it wasn’t until recently that some opportunities began to cross my path.

Part of the reason I don’t think it happens very often is that my illustration style is more whimsical, which means that most corporate clients simply won’t be a fit for that kind of work. However, when a project is a fit, the results are really exciting and I’d like to share one of the projects I’m currently working on.

Here is a graphic that I created for a Bible journaling resource. If you’re not familiar with it, Bible journaling is way of creatively interacting with the words in the Bible. A person literally draws in their Bible with markers, paint, pencils, stickers, or whatever other artistic tool interests them.

The project I worked on was creating an original graphic for use in an e-newsletter combined with copy which would provide more information about the product.

I’m super pleased with what I created and look forward to connecting with more companies and products looking for whimsical graphic solutions.

Each time I reach a milestone there is a part of me that tries to downplay it or dismiss it as not being a big deal. But it’s important to recognize these moments, no matter how small, because each one is a stepping stone to the next opportunity.

I especially like the idea of starting out the week on a positive note. So what would that be for you? What’s one thing you’ve got going on right now that you are really proud of?
