Christmas Card Conundrum

Alrighty, so we are well into the holiday season; trees are trimmed, stockings are hung with care, and our true love has purchased a bizarre number of birds to give to us for 12 consecutive days.

Seriously, have you ever noticed how many birds are gifted in that song? Maybe when “The 12 Days of Christmas” was written more people were into birds, but I honestly wonder if someone was struggling for an idea and heard their beloved say something like, “Have you seen how many partridges are hanging out next door? They seem to have no interest in my apple tree.” #accentwork So they started with the two-fer gift of a partridge AND a pear tree and when that was well received they just went ALL IN on birds.

Anyhoo, this is a time of year when traditions are big. Baking cookies, watching Christmas movies, and going on a holiday lights tour, are just a few of the ways to bring the good tidings and cheer.

Although I will say I think caroling has taken a hit over the years. It may just be the social circles that I run in, but I don’t know many people going around singing to their neighbors. Of course, now that I’m saying it, that REALLY does sound like something I would enjoy.

SIDENOTE: My best-friend growing up was named Carol and I do recall thinking how cool it was that her name was used to describe the act of going around singing random songs to people. Rebecca-ing just doesn’t roll off the tongue the same way.

Although if it did, Rebecca-ing would be the joyful tradition of singing any random song Christmas or otherwise (most likely off-key) AND would also include dance breaks. To my neighbor Gary, you’ve been warned.

One of my family’s favorite traditions is making our Christmas card. For those of you who may not know, we put quite a bit of time into coming up with an idea. #crazyamountoftime

I’ve included some examples from Christmas past, but far and away our favorite one was the year we rode Santa’s sleigh on our driveway.

The gist of the idea was that I drew a sleigh in chalk on our driveway, then all 4 of us laid around the drawing, taking pictures of all the nonsense that ensued and the end result looked really cool. #truestory

Since it’s already the 14th of December it’s time for us to get the show on the road and figure out Christmas Card 2021. Consensus is that we want to do a similar concept as Santa’s sleigh (chalk drawing on the driveway) but we need to come up with a new approach.

That’s where you come in. I would love to hear from you about what we could draw on our driveway as the environment for this year’s card. I make no promises about what direction we will go, but I’m open to the possibility that you dear reader may have the perfect idea for us.

Please respond to this email or comment on the blog with what this year’s chalk drawing should be. Maybe we are elves in Santa’s workshop? Should we be on Santa’s sleigh again, but now it’s the return trip?

Oh and if my initial comments have you wondering about how many of the 12 days of Christmas were actually birds, check out my quirky take on this song in both print and mug form in my shop. Shop.rebeccagallagher.com

I look forward to hearing from you!

Polar Express train car/engine, or a Christmas tree with people in various stages of climbing, or sitting under perusing gifts?

Thanks Curt! I appreciate the ideas. This post definitely hit a chord because I’m getting lots of responses. It’ll be fun to pick a direction and share the process of putting it together.
