Be the Decider

Recently I was reminded of something I use to do. I’m not referring to pretending to be British when I’m at a store, because I STILL do that to this day. Only now, I can justify it as “practice” for a future audiobook I’m recording.

No, this recollection I had was around something I refused to do. For years, decades really, I would not consider myself an artist.

Sure, I was always seeking out artistic events and activities, but because I struggled to make ANYTHING I liked, I wondered if I was more “artistic groupie.” Someone who was drawn (pun intended) to people who created, but who had nothing to contribute herself.

Fast-forward to this past week my Typism-Selfie got reposted on the Typism Instagram page (#pinchme) & I had some artwork purchased from my online shop where the customer wasn’t a friend or family member. (As much as I love you all, it is a different thrill to make a random sale from some dude in Hoboken.)

So what changed? How did I go from hiding away most of what I made to now running a creative business where the title of “artist” is printed on my business cards?

I did one simple thing. I decided to do it.

Rather than waiting for someone to give me permission or looking to another to deem me worthy of the title, I decided to step into that role and just do the work.

I’ve been reading a lot about mindset and how victories can be won or lost depending upon a person’s mindset. Our brains can be a powerful tool to launch us forward or hold us back, so why not use it to our advantage?

Depending upon what baggage or obstacles you may have in your life, what I’m saying may seem impossible.

Please don’t misunderstand, I did not say it was easy. I only said it was simple.

If there is something you want to try, a skill you want to achieve, or trait you want to possess; give yourself permission to take a step in that direction.

Don’t be afraid to start small, be afraid of never starting at all.

Let me know what that goal/skill/dream is for you, because I would love to cheer you on.

Thanks again for allowing me to drop into your inbox. Please share this post with anyone you know who may enjoy this type of content and until next time…keep creating and connecting.
